While London pooches may be happy with a quick pop to brunch as their daily exercise, rural pups need a little more than that. Here’s a list of dogs that will ensure your pup fits in and thrives with the country canine set.

  1. Border Collie

These energetic dogs were originally bred for herding sheep. They’re close-bonding, workaholics who make wonderful country companions. Border Collie’s are quick to learn, intelligent and thrive in a rural setting!

  1. Border Terrier

Border Terriers are small dogs, weighing around 5-7kg. These pups are affectionate, easy-going and enthusiastic. While these terriers will be keen to go on long walks every day, they are also happy to laze by the fire on a cold afternoon. In addition, border terriers make good watchdogs without the excessive barking.

  1. Whippets

Whippets are reserved but friendly dogs who need daily burst of free-running off the lead. They were originally bred for catching and chasing rabbits. While good country dogs, the whippet’s thin coat makes them vulnerable to the cold and early training is required to control their natural hunting instincts on walks.

  1. Labrador Retriever

Amiable, fun-loving and playful, Labradors are used for flushing and retrieving game. These pups make brilliant family or gun dogs. They require plenty of daily exercise and are powerful swimmers. The perfect dog for active country owners!

  1. English Cocker Spaniel

English cocker spaniels are strong-willed dogs that need determined yet kind owners. They make brilliant gun dogs, originally bred for flushing game. They are enthusiastic and willing to please dogs that require lengthy, energetic walks.
